Many of LA Confidential’s effects can be credited to its 100% indica heritage. It’s been a favorite in the weed world for years, even before it was named “strain of the year” by High Times in 2006.

The relaxing and sedating power of LA Confidential (also known as Confidential and Confidential OG) is legendary. The experience can be euphoric, conducive to deep thoughts, and even psychedelic.

This strain is equally suited to a night of vegging out and drifting off to sleep, or enjoying the heavy THC buzz as stress, pain, and cares float away. And medical patients use it for pain, chronic stress, and insomnia.

LA Confidential may smell skunky but it’s extremely pleasant-tasting, and its green buds highlighted by tiny purple leaves and orange pistils add to the appeal.

Effects and Side Effects

Extremely relaxing yet well-balanced is a good way to describe this pure indica strain with strong THC content.

LA Confidential’s indica genetics show themselves quickly once you fire up a bowl. The first thing you’re likely to feel is a deep sense of calm, both in the mind and the body — particularly the body. It doesn’t take long to feel physically numb, and couch lock may follow in short order (but not for all users).

The mental relaxation isn’t necessarily numbing, though. The overall feeling may be a warm buzz, but it just as commonly brings with it a sense of happiness or euphoria that wipes out negative thoughts. Some users find that LA Confidential triggers a cerebral mindset, and others may enjoy a more psychedelic experience if they go for a few extra tokes.

Overall, however, this strain is a sedating one that can quickly put you to sleep if you keep going after hitting the “deeply relaxed” stage. In fact, most of LA Confidential’s effects become extremely strong the more you smoke.

Cottonmouth is quite common when you indulge in this strain, as are dry eyes and of course, lethargy. Headaches and dizziness are possible when you overdo things, as are anxiety and paranoia among those who find those symptoms worsening with the use of high-THC strains.

Medical Conditions

LA Confidential is an excellent strain to try if you deal with insomnia or poor sleep, and that’s the number one health reason that patients choose it. It’s also used by those with chronic pain and discomfort, particularly conditions like arthritis, swelling, and inflammation.

Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression (with the usual warning about overdoing things potentially making those issues worse) are other reasons patients choose LA Confidential. It can boost appetite as well, thanks to its tendency to bring on the munchies.

Flavor and Aroma

Pine and skunk are the first clues that you’re dealing with LA Confidential; the aromas dominate and are likely to make you think that you’re about to taste some somewhat unpleasant weed. Of course, skunky-smelling weed is often delicious, and this strain is the perfect example.

That’s not to say that LA Confidential doesn’t taste like pine; it does, a lot. But the flavor also has sweet, spicy, and earthy elements along with less skunk than you’d probably expect, making the thick, smooth smoke extremely tasty and complex.

Flavor and Aroma Ratings:

  • Earthy: 3/5
  • Citrus: 1/5
  • Fruity: 3/5
  • Spice: 2/5
  • Wood: 3/5

Cannabinoids and Terpenes

This strain has an average THC content of 17%, but it’s not at all unusual to find batches that top 20%. There’s only a small amount of CBG and virtually no CBN in LA Confidential; its effects are almost completely due to its indica genes and THC content.

The earthy, woody, and spicy flavors of the strain are primarily due to the terpenes humulene, pinene, caryophyllene, and phellandrene, with myrcene and limonene also represented.

Lineage

Surprisingly, LA Confidential was first bred in Amsterdam by two kids from Southern California, Don Morris, and Aaron Yarkoni. They crossed a SoCal strain known as OG LA Alfie with a landrace Afghan indica, and the product quickly became popular both in California and Europe.

Many of the characteristics of LA Confidential clearly resemble that Afghan heritage and are bolstered by those of OG LA Alfie, another pure indica powerhouse.

Similar Strains

Master Kush is quite similar to LA Confidential when it comes to taste and aroma, and Kosher Kush (another strain produced by the same cultivator as LA Confidential) is more similar when it comes to effects. Other similar strains include Lavender Kush, Mandarin Dreams, and Blueberry.

LA Confidential: FAQ

Q: How can LA Confidential deliver both cerebral and psychedelic effects?
A: That’s actually not unusual for well-balanced indicas, but it’s important to realize that not all users will experience the same high from any strain. Some people will feel a calmer and cerebral effect, while for others it can be euphoric and psychedelic. The difference in effects can be due to the amount of weed smoked, but it’s also simply because everyone’s brain and body react differently.

Q: Is LA Confidential a good strain for home growers to tackle?
A: Definitely. It’s a small, bushy indica plant that grows well indoors as long as the environment has proper temperatures, humidity and lighting; outdoors, it needs a warm and dry climate like the Southern California area where it flourishes. It also flowers in just 6-8 weeks, meaning growers can usually count on turning out two crops per year.
