If you’ve heard the word “zaza” in a song, it’s referring to really good weed. That’s where the ZaZa strain got its name, but it’s not just really good — it’s killer weed.

This 70/30 indica-dominant strain delivers a long-lasting, uplifting head high that can brighten anyone’s day, but it’s best known for its extreme, body-locking physical effects that are sedating more often than not. ZaZa is perfect for those who badly need a good night’s sleep.

This strain is a dank one. It features strong citrus and pine aroma, with not-insignificant amounts of earth, diesel, and berries as well. Once you spark up, the citrus, earth and pine dominate, with the gas showing up in the aftertaste.

The THC level in ZaZa isn’t the highest you’ll find, but the sleepy high will last for hours.

Effects

ZaZa’s cerebral buzz comes on fairly slowly.

At first, you’ll feel happy. The uplifting cerebral high eliminates any stress and anxiety that you’ve built up, replacing it with mental relaxation that may become long-lasting, comfortable bliss. It’s not an energetic or productive feeling; you won’t have any desire to tackle your to-do list, but you’ll feel just fine about simply enjoying the happiness.

That’s when strong relaxation expands into the rest of your body. It’s so strong that it becomes a full-body melt that plants you firmly onto the couch. Everyday, aches and pains disappear, and sedation arrives (usually bringing the munchies with it). The ZaZa body buzz may not put you down for the count, but it will probably make you sleepy and ready for bed.

ZaZa isn’t a good wake-and-bake or daytime choice. In fact, you shouldn’t try using this strain if you have anything that needs to be done for the next few hours — or even longer. ZaZa is an ideal weed to use about an hour before bedtime, as it will let you enjoy the high for a while and then vanish into dreamland until the next morning.

Bottom Line: ZaZa delivers an excellent, long-lasting, stoney high, with a stress-relieving, happy head buzz and a powerful couch lock that makes it perfect for late-evening use.

Side Effects

There’s often a price to be paid for getting totally wasted, and ZaZa’s price comes in the form of dry eyes, cottonmouth, and mild dehydration. Expect to be lethargic, too.

There could also be a surcharge; users not accustomed to potent weed could experience dizziness, headaches, anxiety, or paranoia. Those side effects are often due to hitting the pipe too hard, but newer smokers and those who already suffer from anxiety are particularly likely to experience those more serious negative effects. If that describes you, start slowly with ZaZa.

Negative Effects:

  • Paranoid: 3/5
  • Dry Mouth: 5/5
  • Dry Eyes: 5/5
  • Lethargy: 4/5
  • Cough: 3/5

Medical Conditions

ZaZa is quite popular among patients with insomnia or other sleep disorders since it’s able to lull almost all users into a satisfying night’s sleep. The powerful relaxation provided by the strain is valued almost as highly by pain patients, who say the full-body melt combined with the uplifting mental high makes their pain seem to disappear — at least until the high wears off.

That cerebral uplift can be a godsend to MMJ users who are dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, or depression (although some anxiety patients may find that ZaZa worsens their condition, so they have to be careful at first). The weed’s tendency to bring on the munchies can help those with eating disorders that curb their appetite, too.

Flavor and Aroma

Unless you’re using a smell-proof humidor or vacuum-sealed bag, it’s impossible to keep ZaZa’s presence a secret. Its dank lemon, pine, earth, and diesel scents will not only make your mouth water, but they will also do the same for everyone in your immediate vicinity.

The complex flavor of this strain includes everything you’ve smelled: citrus, earth, pine, and diesel, as well as ammonia and berries. The lemon and diesel stay with you a while, thanks to the weed’s aftertaste.

Flavor and Aroma Ratings:

  • Earthy: 4/5
  • Citrus: 5/5
  • Fruity: 2/5
  • Spice: 2/5
  • Wood: 3/5

Cannabinoids and Terpenes

An average 20% THC content makes ZaZa a potent bud, of course, but don’t be deceived by the number. You may find flower at your dispensary with even more impressive numbers, but the knock-out ability of this strain punches well above its weight. There’s about 1% CBD content in ZaZa, a fairly high amount for a high-THC strain.

Carene, phellandrene, bisabolol, and myrcene are the dominant terpenes in this strain, with a decent amount of pinene also found in most samples (as you might expect from the pine in ZaZa’s aroma and flavor).

Lineage

The California breeder, South Bay Genetics, created ZaZa, but there are two theories as to the plant’s parents. Most people believe that it’s a cross of Scotts OG and Gas Station Bob, although some think the parent strains were Blue Dream and Rare Dankness #1.

Other cultivators who’ve tried to replicate ZaZa have used both combinations for breeding, so the bud you purchase at a retail outlet may have different parentage — and slightly different characteristics — depending on which strains they’ve combined.

Where to Buy ZaZa Seeds

Pev Grow, Cannabis Seeds USA, and Herbies Seeds all sell feminized ZaZa seeds. As we mentioned a moment ago, though, different cultivators create these seeds from different parent strains, so you have to check to see what you’re buying.

For example, Pev Grow’s seeds are Scotts OG-Gas Station Bob, Herbies Seeds sells a Blue Dream-Rare Dankness #1 cross, and Cannabis Seeds USA doesn’t give any lineage information. Caveat emptor.

Similar Strains

Some of the other strains that provide similar effects to ZaZa are Hindu Kush, GDP, and Tahoe OG Kush.
